Kat Matthews Smashes Course Record, Opens Pro Series Title Defence
Bahrain Victorious 13 carried its strong start to the 2026 season forward as Britain's Kat Matthews delivered a standout performance at Ironman New Zealand, claiming the race title with a new women's course record of 8 hours, 28 minutes and 55 seconds, more than ten minutes inside the previous mark.
Matthews exited the 3.8km swim in Lake Taupo more than two minutes down on the leaders, but quickly rewrote the race on the 180km bike leg, bridging up to the front group inside the opening 35 kilometres. Once on the run, she set a relentless pace and steadily extended her advantage, crossing the line nearly seven minutes clear of her closest rival,the perfect opening statement in her defence of the Ironman Pro Series title.
The result underlines a powerful start to the season for the Bahraini team, particularly following the announcement of its 2026 roster, which features some of the biggest names in triathlon and endurance sport, including Georgia Taylor-Brown, Cassandre Beaugrand, Marten Van Riel and Youri Keulen. The team continues to prepare for the year's marquee fixtures across the World Triathlon Championship Series and the Ironman calendar, as part of an integrated sporting project that cements Bahrain's presence on the global endurance stage , with sights set on more podiums and major international titles throughout the 2026 season.
